Have you used DeceasedOnline.co.uk for genealogy?
This site offers free searches of a centralized database for
burials and cremations in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Similar to ScotlandsPeople, you can search DeceasedOnline.co.uk for free, but downloading actual records costs a certain number of credits. Available records include:
- Digital scans of cremation and burial registers
- Digital scans of books of remembrance
- Photographs of graves and memorials
- Cemetery maps showing grave locations
- Other occupants in the same grave
This is the first central database of statutory burial and cremation registers for the UK and Republic of Ireland. The advantage of this site is its aggregation of data, eliminating the need to research more than 3,000 burial authorities and over 250 crematoria in the UK alone, each independently holding their own registers, mostly as old fragile books. Searches can be customized by country, region, county, or individual burial authority or crematorium together with name.
They work with UK burial and cremation authorities to convert their register records, maps, and photographs into digital form and bring them together into a central searchable collection. No official central repository from the British government exists for these records.
Their database contains records from the 1850s onward, revealing previously unknown family links from other interments recorded in the same grave.
The site was launched in July 2008 and additions are constantly being made to their substantial database of tens of millions of burial and cremation records from all over the UK. To check which areas are covered and when new data is being added, visit this link.
Don’t let the pay factor discourage you. My Scots line in Aberdeenshire is well represented in this database, so I have a lot of great new information for deaths and burials and family groups. Old Parish Registers in Scotland are very spotty for burial records, so this is a great resource for anyone doing research in the UK.
